“The best thing to hold on to in life is each other”

Audrey Hepburn

Congratulations, you are getting married!

I believe your wedding cake is the centrepiece of your reception and on your special & romantic day I want your dream cake to create that “Wow” factor when your guests walk into your reception.

It can seem a little daunting preparing for your wedding, and the question I hear a lot is “What do we do when it comes to the cake?”, “what size will we need?” and “how much will it cost?”.

I have broken this down into 3 easy sections:

Process, Portion & Prices.

Firstly, our Wedding cake process takes you from your initial contact to delivery of your wedding cake.

Process

Step 1

As soon as you have chosen your date and venue, please get in touch with me to check availability. Ideally as much notice as possible should be given and my diary is usually open 2-3 years in advance.

To give each wedding cake the attention it deserves, I work on a maximum of two wedding cakes per week thus guaranteeing the highest care & attention to detail.

If you are unsure about the design of your cake you can still secure your date with a £100.00 non-refundable booking fee, and we can have your consultation once the details have been sorted.

Check to see if we have your date free.

Step 2

I hold consultations in my spacious studio based in Swadlincote. Prior to this meeting I encourage you to bring any items that will help with the design process: invites, colour swatches, or inspiration boards.

As you taste the different flavours of cake and chat about your special day, I am listening & taking notes to understand how you want your day to be and feel. I then start sketching your cake, so you can visualise what it will look like.

Once you are both happy, I add colour and bring it to life! Every one of our creations is designed to meet your dream and is as unique as both of you. It is from this design that I then provide your wedding cake proposal.

Step 3

A month before your wedding date, we get together to go over all of the finer details. In the week leading up to your wedding date I will liaise with the venue to confirm delivery times. If any other suppliers are relevant to the cake, i.e., flowers or venue dressing, I will also liaise with them to make sure everything runs smoothly. The only thing you then have to do is enjoy your day, your cake, and the rest of your married life.

Top Q & A on cakes

Next, our Wedding cake portion guide will give you information regarding sizes and portions.

Portions

All of our sponge cakes are mainly 4 layers of lovely sponge with 3 layers of filling, including jams, curds & buttercreams. Fondant cakes are then covered in a luxurious white Belgian chocolate ganache and covered with the best sugar paste ready for decoration. Currently the trend is for taller cakes and we can create these using 6 layers of lovely sponge and 5 layers of filling, alternatively, a cake card can be used in the middle of a tall tier creating 2 separate cakes with 3 layers of sponge and 2 layers of filling for each.

You may have heard wedding cake portions being classed as either finger or dessert portions. A finger portion is approx.  1” x 1” x 4.5”-5” high and is served in the evening along with additional food. A dessert portion is slightly bigger at approx.  1” x 2” x 4.5”- 5” and served as a dessert following the wedding breakfast.

You may have always dreamed of a larger cake but only plan on having a small number of guests. Cake dummies can always be used to create the design so not to waste any cake. Also, consider the number of guests when working out tier sizes & portion numbers as not everyone will want cake and there may be others who will eat more than 1 slice! Making sure that the venue knows how much each tier should be cut into can make a big difference. There is nothing worse than having your dream cake, but not enough to go around due to larger slices having been cut.

Finally, our Wedding cake pricing guide will give you an idea of prices.
