Cake International 2018

Last weekend, 2nd November to the 4th November was the largest cake show in the world; Cake International 2018, held at the NEC in Birmingham. From novice cake makers right up to masterclass cake makers this was the place to be for seeing all of the latest equipment, products, trends and of course cakes! With lots of new categories ranging from wedding cakes, small decorative items, illusion cakes, cupcakes and many many more lots of entries were received and lots of marking done by the judges. This year over 2,500 entries were received! I attended on Friday and purchased lots of new items along with some books and lots of new free products like sugar paste and flower paste to try out. All day Friday the judges go round and mark according to design and visual appeal, neatness, originality, creativity, colour, craftsmanship, degree of difficulty, number of techniques used and amount of handmade decorations. Above is a selection of my favourites from the wedding cakes.

On Saturday all of the marks for the entries have been placed along with the judges marking so there are a lot more people attending. Some are very excited, some are disappointed but the great thing about Cake International is that you are not competing with everyone else, you are being marked on your own work.

Lots of demonstrations were also happening on Saturday and I got to see one of my favourite cake makers Peboryon; Phil and Chris Jennson – I even got to chat to Phil! Also on stage was Paul Bradford from Cakeflix with Molly from Molly Bakes Cakes making a pizza cake.

With tired feet, lots of heavy bags, but still very excited we made our way back home to get ready for next years Cake International.
